Handcrafted Espadrilles

Pure Craftsmanship
What is an espadrilles?
The espadrille is a shoe made on a sole of jute with a rubber tread. The name comes from France and is named after a type of grass that was often used to make rope. Nowadays it is a typical summer shoe because the material makes them very light and airy. The espadrille makes his comeback every year in the collection of Fred de la Bretoniere. Every season we offer many different models; from espadrilles with wedge heel, the iconic espadrille loafer, as well as espadrilles with laces.
How are espadrilles made?
In the production process of Fred de la Bretoniere's espadrilles, a rope is first braided from jute into an oval shape. This braid is then turned on a mold designed for this purpose. This twisted shape is again placed in another mold in which it is compressed. A rubber tread is then vulcanized (baked) underneath.
The shoe (upper) is manually stitched to the sole by hand. This is usually done at workers' homes. When the upper is stitched to the sole, it is pulled around an aluminum mold and given its final shape.
